Why So Many Beautiful Women in “Russia” (Eastern Europe)?

In the Former Soviet Union, beauty is a MUST for women. The multitude of reasons have History, Survival and Dignity in their common denominator.

Genetics

There’s an observation that best genes come up when different races match. (So do less viable genes, to be sifted away more quickly.) For ages, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus (to some degree) and Eastern regions of the Former Soviet Union have been witnessing different peoples’ migrations, invasions, forced relocations, as well as massive missions for trade, work and education.

What hasn’t worked with the New World? Well, it took unwomanly courage to abandon well-established dwellings for conquering and cultivating some wild lands across the ocean – a tough challenge to families and no option for “good” single ladies of the colonial times. Then, who would take the pains of such a daring relocation to accompany adventurers to the Wild America, if successful enough with local men? What worthy woman would be let to join exiled criminals to Ruthless Australia?

But what has left the whole West a body behind the Slavic world in the beauty contest, was the medieval Europe’s Holy Inquisition. As it labelled a woman “the vessel of filth and sin”, responsible for men’s lust (which couldn’t but torment them for its ultimate suppression by the priesthood exploiting guilt to exert the power of condemning and absolving), beauty was a crime in itself. Putting all beautiful women to death for diabolism and sorcery by groundless delations (“Why is she attracting men while I am not, eh?” “Why does she make me lust her while I shan’t? – “Why won’t she get drowned like a decent woman should?” “Just listen to her confessions under torture!” – “Burn the witch!”) was a genocide comparable only to the extinguishment of bright, strong and enterprising men in the USSR.

Well, “Russian men” ™ deserve a special post. And lingering on the “Russian-women-jumping-out-of-their-skins-to-win-and-hold-a-decent-man” stereotype, we’ll play into the hands of “frigid Feminazi”.) It’s puzzling how could they forget that sexuality is an essential part of human self, whatever sex, that is “produced to give” not “asked for”?

Sexiness as Such

In the Orthodox Christian countries of the Slavonic part of Eastern Europe, still cherishing their ancient pagan ancestors’ affinity with Mother Nature, sex was treated rather leniently. It pervaded folklore (filled with a life-asserting attitude, more good-humored in Ukraine to more brutal in Russia), and even a part of clergy were allowed to have families.

By the way, a Witch has been a popular character in our folklore and literature, usually depicted with much comical and positive strokes, as a wise and energetic woman, generally helpful however tricky. A Ukrainian witch is a mature youngish woman, popular with men, mischievous to especially randy ones and to “witch hunters” trying uselessly to corner her. A witch from Russian tales is an old beldam symbolizing Mother Nature; she threatens to eat the hero, puts him/her through trials, and eventually rewards with some essential artefacts and knowledge.

Things have changed in the Soviet Union. Like the Western Inquisition, the State took a grip on its subjects’ genitals in a style perfectly epitomized by George Orwell, in order to channel libidous energy into underpaid labor, and dissatisfaction into hatred for “the outer enemies” and spying for “the internal enemies”. Love was reduced to “class-correct” procreation and control, families to “cells of the society”, women to “comrades workers”, beauty to chastity, arts and design to propaganda. Cosmetics, fashion clothes and viable footwear, lingerie… what lingerie, just purely functional underwear and tights were deficit (the Country needed tanks!)

No wonder, on a TV live space bridge between the Soviet and US youth, a Russian girl coined a historical saying, “Sex? There is no sex in the USSR!” No wonder, women have been struggling to look beautiful by any means available (couture dresses and knitwear hand-made of nothing; horrid-looking mash of berries to apply instead of face creams; shampooing with rye bread or egg yolk recommended by movie stars), and, with the consumer market filled, they rushed avidly to compensate for years of harness on their femininity.

Whereas their Western sisters find humiliation in improving their appearance, “Russian” women take pride in looking different from men (translated: feminine, understood: sexy), and think a woman is oppressed when something does not let her go as beautiful as she can be. Even convicts of shabbiest female prisons (destitute of ANYTHING but food and shelter) try to tart up their clothings and to make up. What for? Just for the art of it, beauty for the beauty’s sake. To feel themselves, to feel complete, to feel civilized human beings.

It’s notable that L’Oréal cosmetics are best-selling to our womenfolk, with that slogan “Because You’re Worth It”.

Our newsmarket is occupied with women’s magazines, books and websites where beauty is the dominating topic (thanks a lot to fashion & beauty global corporations), and the motto can be voiced like, “Born to be a woman? Then enjoy yourself!”

(If it were purely for attracting men, we wouldn’t “die” to look this slim. It’s our girls’ complot and feat, instigated by the media images of perfection. While most loudly moaning “Russian” men are craving for “where are the good old Russian-style” plump bodies…)

Life & Business

A beautiful Russian woman finds it hard to make her professional and entrepreneurial qualities seen through her youthful looks, to overcome the prejudice that “brain and beauty never go together”, and to defend herself against [real] harassment that at times may go outrageous. But, having spent an evening complaining to her friends on all those clients, bosses, colleagues and counterparts, she wakes up earlier to pick a “nicest outfit for the agenda” and paint another masterpiece of her daily “makeup of respect” to people she would meet, and to the surrounding world at large, which it’s her duty to improve with every little thing that does depend on her.

She knows that, in our Age of Video, Design and Advertising, beauty is what adds most value and lets sustain Competition (which is drastic at the “Russian” job market, with its notorious sexism). She is aware of what “American Researchers have estimated” as for how much more the beautiful people succeed in getting jobs and promotions, selling goods and services, building teams and their companies’ image. Sometimes she consciously flirts to get the deal, or even is charged with an unwritten corporate responsibility to do so. (Leave aside sexual espionage, our “Russian men” often say: “How can one resist the pleasure of helping a beautiful lady!”)

She knows that people tend to interpret looks as a manifestation of human qualities, and she’s learnt by heart what some Western actress said, “If by her 30 a woman is not a beauty, then she is an utter fool.”

And this is why our streets are filled with women who have sworn the oath of beauty. Are there plain girls? Of course, like elsewhere. Either they are well made up, poised with confidence and dressed to kill, or you just cannot notice them against the shine of the surrounding stars…

  1. Kirk Says:

Interesting post. Ok, if beautiful Western European women were killed during the Inquisition — then what about Chinese women or Indian women? I’ve been to both and think Russian women look nicer (although it is difficult to tell with Indian women because they cover themselves up but overall Russian women look better I think).

For the Inquisition argument to work then every country with a low number of attractive women would have killed them off! What about Australian aboriginal women? I haven’t seen any attractive ones (in photos). Couldn’t it be the local culture of Russia instead?

    • ignorance Says:

Indian women don’t cover themselves up. You have them confused with middle eastern women like Arabs and Persians which is sad because they have nothing to do with each other!

  2. wonderlander Says:

    Hi Kirk,

here the point is not about the culture, it’s about race, forged by ancestry, climate and life conditions for thousands of years (especially true for the rugged and isolated background of Australoids!) – and the Call of Blood, resounded in the Need for Someone Similar to Your Ideal Self on a higher level.

Naturally Europeoid is targeted at Europeoid, though the fans of Asian or Somalese girls – and there is a percentage of such men even in Russia! - would argue, especially when there has been a good input of Caucasian genes. )

The Japanese have long considered “round-eyed Barbarians” ugly, until the recent spirit of Dominating Nation Fashion and Exotism / Pursuit of Variety.

Hindou and Latin women constantly win beauty contests… vibrant these winners are!

Yet backward African tribes cherish their ideals of flat-breasted, big-buttock beauty (meaning: maternity, and camel-like storage of vitality).

And a typical Europeoid, – even if fond of exotic porn or culture, – finally has kids with someone looking closer to himself, like his fellow men do, regardless of “political correctness”. Unless a deep fixation over Other Sexotype, triggered by extraordinary circumstances, wins into Love.

Former Soviet Union beauties are Europeoid. Varieties of their looks may have a delicate touch of Mediterranean / Romance, Nordic, Asian / Arabian, Georgian, Hebrew, other type.

Beauty is fundamentally the issue of Function. Many qualities display through it, from health to character (being, in a considerable part, hereditary). Why do there still exist the “global and eternal” features we agree on as Beauty? A Russian writer Yefremov has explained it in his novel “Razor Blade“. I will soon translate this abstract.

    • sa'rah Says:

my my my. someone seems bitter and racist. how dare you confuse your arrogance/contempt for values and ideals? i was with you until you put down “African tribes” for cherishing and loving their own women (first off, in most tribes, the breasts are not considered objects of lust, but just feeders, which is exactly what they are. however, in those very same tribes, large breasts are considered a sign or beauty because they signal a capacity for nurturing. and many many African women have large breasts and voluptous, sexy behinds that they carry like queens). i am guessing that you imagine you are superior to these people. to my people? this is why you are contrasting your own in a favorable way and not just stating your preference for one over the other but actually trying your best to attack our standards of beauty. guess what, that makes you very ugly. so, you have your answer.

  3. Kirk Says:

Ok that is interesting although I was more refering to, if you kill off one attractive gender, such as in Western Europe during the Inquisition then shouldn’t it have an effect on both genders? So if you kill all the beautiful women, shouldn’t the remaining ugly women have ugly children, both boy and girl?

    • sa'rah Says:

no. actually, i have noticed many “ugly” couples have very attractive children. but i have run into a few “ugly families” out there in the world

  4. wonderlander Says:

Well,.. seems like the sets of features deemed “beautiful” for males and females are a bit different? ;)

Falls in line with the relentless complaints I hear over “MANLIKE Western women“. And they are! After a chain of professional faces I’ve remembered in my life, Jen Aniston pops to my mind readily as an example of boyish looks.

On the contrary, dress a Russian girl into male clothes, even let her make a haircut as she may wish, and see a Sexiest Woman…

  5. Kirk Says:

Ok thanks for that I think that’s true. As your comment above I was thinking: what is beauty? Asthetics is the study of the philosophy of beauty — Aristole and Confucious for example studied the nature of beauty
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asthetics
but I would say women’s beauty is more : physical attractiveness
    link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_attractiveness

There are differences (as the link shows) between female and male physical beauty.

What is unusual — about Russia is the ratio of attractive men to women — many more attractive women.

But not unique — I would also say Denmark and the rest of Scandinavia (I studied at the University of Copenhagen several years ago), Hungary, and Brazil are the same as Russia in that as you walk around, you see many, many physically attractive women. America, the UK are the opposite probably – well actually I don’t know how many attractive men we have :).

Causes? Why do certain areas have many more attractive women than men? Genes yes, also it seems to me there is a “competitive” aspect, as the ratio between men and women is more lopsided, the women (or men) must compete much more to get the available mate.

What I would add about Russia is that the women are very “lovable” and able to form bonds – unlike (if I am being honest here) Scandinavia — I think this comes from the culture which is the parents “spoil” the children — if the children don’t receive attention by the age of five studies have found that they are not able to form bonds — in Scandinavia parents generally do not give a lot of attention to children, in my experience, although many could disagree — contributes to a very high personal distance between people there.

  6. wonderlander Says:

Thank you for valuable contributions to the topic, Kirk!

It’s very true that in the Former Soviet Union there are less attractive men, even physically. Because our menkind had suffered several waves of genocyde in wars and political repressions, where the most virile – strong, heroic, independent, active, enterprising – perished! Also most men stick to archaic social stereotypes (excessive food = good life & manliness). Here I’ll give an important post “What’s Wrong with Russian Men”.

The countries you have mentioned, first, hadn’t had much “witch hunting”; second, they bring up such decisive factors as climate and socioeconomy.

There is scientific evidence that contrasts increase adaptivity, and (speaking metaphorically) frost forges beauty (Thompson Seton’s “Royal Analostan” is a funny example!), and sunshine fuels metabolism. (Of course, without extremes that shape Eskimos and Masai). Southern-type women, conquering the recent beauty contests, are brimming with vitality, but aging faster. Scandinavia bears less sunshine, but is more “conserved” – both in terms of temper / relations and physique. Eastern Europe, Russia, Ukraine are comfortably in-between again.

Now compare this with the Foggy Albion…

In this context, one should pay attention that Britain’s natural conditions initially offered people scanty nutrition. In the past, whereas Scandinavians enjoyed seafood, some poor higlanders ate soil out of hunger! No Celebration of Living, like in more lavish lands (say, Romance nations), which is part of Life’s Beauty!

What was going on in the upper class? For ages, British marriages were based on social & business considerations – no “natural selection” by physique mattered. Daily ethics have been extremely pragmatic, Protestant religion aligned with fast industrialization. “Spare a rod, spoil a child”.

“Aristocratic” sense of aesthetics didn’t chase outer decorations, it was reckoning on Solidity, Reliability. “If this jacket has served my Grandfather well, it will be good for me as well”. And… soundtrack, please! – the first lines of “Donna e mobile” translate into Russian as “Heart of a beauty / ‘s Prone to betrayal”.

In Russia, people have had less opportunity for material success, and less fixation over it. They found fulfilment in intimate relations, appreciated physical beauty, and complemented it with outer decorations as well as with inner spiritual pursuit. Men tried to reassert themselves through having more beautiful women, women tried to reassert and secure themselves through holding the man. The issue of Personal Distance in Russia is another post I’ve started to draft.

To America’s justice, I’ll point out that there is a considerable percentage of beautiful women. JFK called the country a Great Melting Pot; most ambitious people have been striving there, and many women got their tickets exactly for their beauty.

And, from a woman’s viewpoint, there are very many beautiful men in the West! My business encounters, press scans and foreign trips leave a sense of having been inside a male model catalogue )

On the other hand, of 40 men joining dating sites at the same time, not every 40 include a face worth clicking for a profile. (( And it’s sad.

One more curious factor here is that, a handsome stranger seems “alien awesome”, and a plain stranger seems “alien ugly”. The Call of Blood in its full wayward voice. )

  7. Colin Says:

I suppose soon enough my aesthetic judgment will be publicly recognized. In other words I am paid to create beauty and highly paid for my sense of what is beautiful. And without a shadow of a doubt Russian women are the most beautiful in the world.

I don’t have the time to explain why in complete terms. However, in many instances Russian women have an innate sense of balance and physical context in their presentation of themselves. For example, type, texture and colour of clothing, hair style, makeup, even body shaping and its finer definition and presentation–body language. Russian women know the inner energy of sex appeal. Their sense of genetic survival often creates a deep inner sense of the power of beauty. I agree that, yes, they embrace beauty and it shows in their eyes and their deportment.

Purely physically speaking they have the extraordinary triple facial balance. Most beautiful girls of other countries and races have only one or two.

In the West there is the “Cult of Entitlement” as far as the women are concerned and a social rejection of the laudible nature of female pulchritude.

All procreation studies all discuss what constitutes a preferred female mate. Men are considerably visual.

The author of this site has understood the fundamental dynamics of selection–beauty chosing handsome, whenever possible. Thus ensuring greater desirability of the offspring and greater possibility of ensuring survival of the genes–the imperative of the physical, conscious nature of the physical body. Does the body have its own consciousness, apart from the spirit of its inhabitant? I think yes.

Which translates to who is controlling who? Ever seen a man of 20 saying no to sex? He says yes with his mind or his body? And on any particular day would he be more predisposed to give his “seed” to a clearly beautiful woman or a physically ugly woman? So who then gets pregnant on that day, the beautiful or the ugly girl? Voila. Natural selection.

My theory is that the body does much of the choosing. And there is no amount of Western social conditioning which can eliminate mother nature in the race to ensure genetic survival.

With improving Russian economy and a considerably more satisfying and “beautiful” culture of people in Russia, those open to exodus should quiet considerably sooner rather than later. Six years ago the commercial websites were overflowing with beautiful Russians. Now there are noticeably less, by percentage, and single mothers looking for a pragmatic union.

Demographics and economy is reducing the desire to go. This is good news for Russia. As now the pool of beautiful locals will more and more be sought after–by percentage, after nearly ten years of exodus. Demographics is also correcting.

Western men will be forced to relocate or say yes to many who have been rejected in the mating pool of local selection.

Further, the cultural divide and desireability of most Western men will only serve to remind Russian women that a good Russian man would be a better choice for them. Alcoholism is hard to breed out. But Russian women are not simply Americans born in Russia by an accident of birth. In other words, they are not simply Americans born in a foreign land. They are born of the finest culture and people on the planet.

My opinion is that Russian girls are perhaps too good for the general type of Westerner who seeks to take them away from the very place responsible for creating all that they are.

If Western men do not understand the inner fineness of Russian girls and how to nurish their soul; then they will serve merely as a curious part of their(girls)lives.

Russia has the world’s greatest culture. To import them only to convert them to television watching lonely girls is a monstrous mistreatment of these incredible creatures.

Beautiful bodies, faces, souls and characters.

All cowboys are dreaming if they think that they can even begin to satisfy the most divine girls on the planet. And the divorce rate backs it up.

Dreamers. There is no such thing as something for nothing.

  8. wonderlander Says:

Thank you for a beautiful comment, Colin! )

With all the value of its own, the beauty of a normal Russian woman is a slick friendly interface of the Intel inside. File filling and software may vary. But even if we take a non-professional, home or game configuration without any business features, this machine is pretty over-qualified and high-maintenance.

    - If she’s only motivated and trained exclusively to be a man’s lover and wife, she needs his participation, perception and rapport so that to fulfil her program of togetherness by souls, minds and spirits.

    - If she’s an infantile entertainment sort, she feels unconsciously unhappy with her aimlessness and limited-purpose use. However wildly she may “reassert” herself by partying, shopping or beautycare. Vicious circle, mutual trouble.

So, it’s truly a huge mistake to consume her beauty as if she were an exotic decorative plant. She is born to be a learner, inquirer and companion, and waits for the man to be her world-opener, who’ll discover, enjoy and involve her inner talents, and show her into the wonders of life. If he can’t get on her page, enrich her knowledge with his (and probably vice versa), if he can’t get her admiration as a personality, – marrying her is like adopting a race hound as a toy dog.

    Subcorpus… interesting username.

Yes, Russia has a way of sneaking up on you. You’ve already seen its diamonds.

Of course, all things are relative. And all places have their positive and negatives. However, how in God’s name could a clear thinking and feeling man not come to your same comment?

    Best of luck.

  12. Peewee Says:

I think it does come down to a mixed gene poole.
Thats why you find a lot of inbred races less attractive /
and have more diseases. Perhaps thats why many Indian women have become attractive since British colonisation

  13. jack Says:

A bit overstated. There are lots of beautiful American women. Most of them, however, are not movie stars.

The beauty standards differenciate from country to country, btw…

  15. Holly Says:

    Natalia,
I have been very interested in your posts, specifically the topics relating to Russian women’s perception of beauty and the “culture of beauty” that seems so prevalent among so many younger women. A question that has been in my mind during and after my visits to Russia is “why are Russian women (young) so thin?” I am in my final year at university and am working on a paper about eating disorder in Russian women. Do you believe that these women are truly “naturally” thin or is there more underneath the surface?

    I appreciate your comments!

  16. wonderlander Says:

The extraterrestrial slenderness of young women around puzzles me, too, looking extremely dramatic in contrast with most desired actresses of my parents’ generation. I’m a 166 cm / 54 kg “condensed copy” of my mother, and I come across girls of comparable height who weigh 40-something! This elongation-and-refinement seems a global trend (just look at the evolution of James Bond’s mates) that combines physical changes in conditions of life affecting natural mutations, fetation, nutrition, hormones, actual need for muscle, etc., and gradual sexual selection according to fashion since Twiggy.

What prevents the problem of obesity that pesters the West is that organic food is still relatively more available (given own “dachas”, relatives at countryside, numerous markets full of lonely babushkas who live on tiny farming, and food industries of more tradition and integrity than of investment into hazardous technologies), and that our women take much effort to slim down – or observe enough discipline not to gain weight. Slimness seems a #1 topic in women’s media and talking. Let alone the prescribed tastes of high-ranking men, we may struggle for a chosen self-image even against the protests of those men who quote that “guys ain’t dogs to rush for bones”. :) Sometimes it’s much about peer competition, – some naively tribal drive that beclouds practical reason just like the proverbial “phallometria” among males.

And health is above all. The challenges of life won’t tolerate lack of it. There was a period when I was so unhappy with my job that I was eating like an alcoholic is drinking. Whew! +10 kg in 2 years, 2 more years to shake them off, no more kilo again! I say, human physique has changed. Even a generation ago plump women were hard-bodied and vigorous; but if made in 2000s, excessive fat tissue produces only flab and short wind.

  17. American Women Says:

I agree. Largely it’s their attitude on sex. Liberal sex attitudes makes for a very attractive girl.

  18. nurkholis Says:

The beauty standart between countries varies depends on culture, race , color and class. even we agree that they are the most beautiful women but we still do not rely upon them. There is something that we can not explain it. We still believe that our girls are the best for us, and your girls best for you at all cases.
